POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Visual Arts Technician supports teachers in the Visual Arts program and acts in the best interest of the care and safety of students at all times. This part-time position has daily responsibilities related to the technical operations and functions of Visual Arts projects. The Technician takes direction from assigned teachers, adheres to all School & OSHA policies and procedures, and does not confer with parents directly about their child’s progress. Adherence to appropriate conduct and dress, as well as all protocols outlined in the AIS Faculty Handbook, is expected.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure student safety in Visual Arts facilities through active supervision and enforcement of safety protocols.
  • Assist teachers with preparation, setup, and cleanup of materials and equipment for art lessons and workshops.
  • Support lessons involving tools, machinery, or materials requiring adult supervision (e.g., paper cutters, kilns, printmaking tools).
  • Maintain and organize classroom tools, art supplies, and storerooms.
  • Keep inventory of art supplies and coordinate restocking with Visual Arts teachers.
  • Perform regular maintenance and cleaning of tools, machinery, and classroom equipment.
  • Support the preparation, mounting, and display of student artwork for exhibitions and events.
  • Assist in the setup and breakdown of artwork installations across campus.
  • Apply fixatives or other materials as needed (with appropriate training).
  • Recycle clay and other materials under teacher guidance.
  • Photocopy or scan art resources as requested.
  • Liaise with other departments to coordinate shared use of certain art supplies and tools.

Health and Safety Requirements

It is required by OSHA that all members of staff, faculty or students working within the technical areas of Design and Visual Arts must be trained on the safety, setup and operation of all equipment. We must also ensure that all workshop tools, machines, equipment and finishes being used by students or adults have been inspected regularly. The technician must be certified and keep up to date with all OSHA requirements, inspections and training specific to each technical area. The technician must actively supervise students working within the Design and Visual Arts facilities, to ensure their safety by guaranteeing the correct setup, operation and maintenance of all equipment.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Visual Arts, Art Education, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience with a range of art materials and tools (e.g., clay, paper, paint, printmaking, mixed media)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Familiarity with safe studio practices and equipment maintenance

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • Experience in visual art or design environments, such as galleries, studios, or arts-focused educational settings
  • Knowledge of art materials, tools, and safe handling practices
  • Basic building or design skills (e.g., installation, mounting, or display setup)
  • Familiarity with kiln operation and ceramics processes (beneficial but not required)
  • An eye for detail and presentation, especially for exhibitions and student displays
