Through these efforts and the provision of outstanding cancer care, the Chair will assure cancer health equity and access to care for the communities served by MCHS.

The Chair will work with MCHS leadership, including regional medical hematology-oncology leaders as well as allied health staff leadership to develop and execute forward-looking strategies to best meet the needs of hematology and oncology patients using specialty expertise, local physician staff, outreach programs, and e-health solutions that advance the highest standards of practice working in a collaborative environment in support of all members of the care team.  The Chair will serve as the MCHS representative within the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, representing the MCHS three-shield perspective within the broader institution.

  • Lead and manage the Hematology-Oncology clinical practice, and the integration of practice with research, particularly clinical trials, within and across the MCHS.
  • Participate in creation and implementation of the specialty practice operating plan in alignment with the Mayo Clinic Health System strategic plan, representing the Mayo Model of Community Care.
  • Collaborate closely with the Mayo Clinic Rochester Departments of Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and the Division of Hematology and Mayo Clinic Cancer Comprehensive Center to create a continuum of cancer care and facilitate navigation of patients between entities as necessary for a state of the art practice.
  • Collaborate with Mayo Clinic and MCCCC strategic initiatives to develop the optimal models of cancer care delivery in community-based health systems by developing the optimal model and blend of in-facility, home-based, and virtual care.
  • With the support, staffing, guidance, and oversight of MCCCC, build and expand a community-based cancer clinical trials infrastructure and system across key sites in the MCHS, assuring that all MCHS patients have access to cancer clinical trials and interventions, including screening, prevention, therapeutic interventional, and other types of interventional and observational trials.
  • With the support of MCCCC and the Center’s Office in Cancer Precision Genomic Medicine, implement cancer genomic testing (germline and somatic mutational analysis of patient cancers) for MCHS patients to facilitate state of the art care.
  • Represent MCHS as a member of the Senior Executive Leadership Committee of the MCCCC
  • Represent MCHS on the Mayo Clinic Hematology/Oncology Specialty Council, focused on practice.
  • Develop relationships related to the practice, information systems, culture, and markets at all regional Mayo Clinic Health System Medical Oncology sites.
  • Provide ongoing communication of institutional, system, and departmental divisional practice issues to the staff.
  • Track and communicate results/progress toward departmental and regional performance measures and targets (e.g., quality, volumes, access/demand, productivity, credentialing/upgrading staff skills, value-based metrics and financial outcomes).
  • Ensure the alignment of critical resources to achieve goals for the department and the Mayo three shields as applicable.
  • Foster mutual respect and appreciation for individual differences; promote diversity objectives in all staff selection, performance management, and development efforts; facilitate productive working relationships and resolve conflicts among staff and between staff groups in the hematology-oncology department.
  • Strive to develop a consistent and replicable standard of care though out the MCHS by dissemination and direction of best practices.
  • Develop and execute a vision for transformation of community Medical Oncology practice including research (particularly based on community clinical trials and intervention, and cancer screening, prevention, early detection, and navigation to care), and education, training, and mentoring.

DESIRED OUTCOMES

  • Elevate Hematology-Oncology Practice to Category One: Lead the Hematology-Oncology practice to become a premier, integrated service within MCHS, embodying excellence in quality, safety, efficiency, patient experience, and staff satisfaction.
