DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY, DIVISION OF LABORATORY MEDICINE
THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABMA AT BIRMINGHAM
The Division of Laboratory Medicine in the Department of Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is recruiting an exceptional MD, PhD, or MD/PhD researcher with a record of extramural funding focused on high containment BSL-3 pathogens. We strongly encourage applicants with NIH funding at the level of Associate or Full Professor who have demonstrated exceptional research success to apply for this endowed professorship position. (). Selected applicants must be able to work in a team environment and will join a diverse and vibrant academic community that values and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Recruitment into this position comes at an opportune time for high containment research at UAB. Our institution hosts one of twelve NIAID-funded Regional Biocontainment Laboratories (RBLs) in the United States, tasked with driving cutting-edge research on biodefense, emerging infectious diseases, and pandemic preparedness. In support of this mission, UAB’s RBL BSL-3 research facility, SEBLAB, recently received > $20 million in G20 and UC7 funding to support the implementation of cutting-edge scientific equipment and establish a core team of research scientists to advance research on BSL-3 pathogens and pandemic preparedness. SEBLAB is amongst the best equipped BSL-3/ABSL-3 labs in the world and includes the first Zeiss lattice light sheet microscope within containment, capable of live cell fluorescence imaging for up to 72 hours. Additional resources include the Agilent Cytation 10 with plate stacker for high throughput screening, Seahorse bioenergetic analyzer, MiLabs ultra-high resolution computed tomography small animal in vivo imaging system, PET/SPECT imagers, humanized mouse models, cell sorters, digital PCR instruments, 10X genomics single cell sequencing system, and the COSMx single cell spatial transcriptomics platform. At UAB, BSL-3 research faculty are extremely well positioned to utilize this cutting-edge infrastructure to make significant and timely contributions to the development of medical countermeasures for emerging threats. This includes a clear path through the Division of Laboratory Medicine to implement diagnostic tests for patient care in CLIA/CAP-accredited clinical and public health laboratories. It also includes key partners to collaborate and drive BSL-3 vaccine development, drug discovery, development, and commercialization including Southern Research and the UAB Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. UAB’s top tier clinical research infrastructure, including the Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic, also enables key partnerships to safely and effectively evaluate the performance of novel medical countermeasures in phase I-III trials.
At the heart of UAB’s urban campus, BSL-3 research faculty also benefit from a large and collaborative microbiology and immunology research community spanning multiple Departments including Pathology, Microbiology , Anesthesiology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Infectious Diseases. The Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health enables access to established research collaborations throughout the world. The Immunology Institute provides a solid research infrastructure, including weekly microbiology and immunology research seminar series and pilot grants. BSL-3 research faculty also benefit from SEBLAB’s critical role within the NIAID NBL/RBL network, enabling access to annual meetings, research seminars, and specialized training sessions. SEBLAB coordinates a monthly high containment research seminar series to stay up to date on the latest research, novel technologies, biosafety, and other aspects critical to high containment research productivity. Opportunities to teach and train students exist throughout the UAB academic enterprise including the School of Medicine and the SOM Graduate Biomedical Sciences program.
A pre-employment background investigation is performed on candidates selected for employment. In addition, physicians and other clinical faculty candidates who will be employed by the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (UAHSF) or other UAB Medicine entities must successfully complete a pre-employment drug and nicotine screen to be hired.
